Welcome!

Diversity

Resources for writing inclusive fiction well and respectfully.

Writing With Color

A multi-person run page with both specific and general advice on writing racially diverse characters, with the option of sending in questions as well.

Writing the Other

A fairly extensive list of resources to look into. Here you can find resources on sexuality,  race, disability, and more. (There is also a lot more on this site, but not all of it is free, so I didn’t include it.)

(Quick note on the last three. I am specifically suggesting that you seek out media NOT from self-appointed “experts,” but from real people who have hands-on experience in the area you are researching.)

Youtube (no link)

Personal YouTube accounts are a great way to start your diversity research. YouTubers often focus on the lighter side of life, but some channels also delve into the deeper stuff, so you can get a pretty good idea of the basics here.

Blogs (no link)

The same ideas apply here as the Personal YouTube channels. Often personal blogs are better for depth, so once you have the basics in mind you can try branching into blogs to dive a little deeper.

Social media (no link)

This one is twofold.

You can use this in the same way as the blogs and YouTube accounts, specifically looking for public social media pages.

But you can also seek out social media groups specially designed to help writers write diversity well. Ideally, a group like this will allow you to reach out to other writers with specific questions, and they may even allow you to post scenarios or snippets of your work so that others, (particularly those who are part of the demographic you are writing about,) can critique it and help assure it’s not offensive/hurtful in any way.
