General Links

Links that every author should probably have bookmarked.

Behind the Name

A user-friendly website for name Etymology. Useful for naming a character, or tracing the origin of a name.

Note: I’ve heard that Behind the Name can be very hit-or-miss with non-Eurocentric names, so you might need to do some extra research to make sure they're accurate.

Dictionary

A basic dictionary for all your word-research needs.

Popular baby names by decade

A public list of the top 200 most popular birth names in the USA, going all the way back to the 1880s.

Etymonline

An Etymological (study of words) dictionary. Helpful for tracing the origin of words to ensure your MC doesn’t accidentally invent a word 200 years early.

Note: this is not a complete dictionary, so some words may not show up.

Grammarly

Online/app grammar checker, to help rid your work of typos. (Grammarly does have are paid account, but you can also use a free account for most grammatical and typographical issues.)

Note: Grammarly now has Generative AI, but you CAN disable it! Go into Account, then Settings, and finally into Feature Customization. Just click the little slider for Generative AI to “off” and you’ll be good!

Pinterest

Pinterest can be used as a search engine for writing tricks, editing advice, writing prompts, and a whole lot more! Follow helpful boards and Pinners in your area of interest, and build your own boards while you're at it.

This link specifically leads to one of my writing boards, but there is a wealth of other information out there as well!

Note: Pinterest is a time-sink, as well as a very mixed bag. Some boards will be super helpful, some will not.

Thesaurus

A basic Thesaurus to make sure your word choices are superlative.

WriteOwl app (no link)

An android-friendly writing app. There are structured tabs for brainstorming, characters, settings, items, and chapters; and you can make folders for individual projects. This app also works offline, so you can write whenever you like.

Note: Some people have had this app malfunction and delete all of their work. I haven’t had this issue personally, but would recommend backing up your work somewhere else, just in case.
