Hello again! This week I thought I'd talk about a trick I've found for combating writer's block.
There are thousands of tricks for beating writer's block, if you just take five minutes to look some up, from changing font to using writing prompts, jumping ahead in the narrative, or killing off a character (to name a few of the more popular options.) There are even full apps and websites dedicated to helping you fend off that annoying pest. Due to this plethora of advice, I am certain my trick has been recommended by many others before and that it will continue to be shared by others, but it is one of my favorites.
Now, onto the trick. I find one of the best ways to fight off writer's block, is simply to change things up. What things? Anything and everything. I'll break it down into three things.
1. Writing environment.
Where do you normally write? An office? A coffee shop? Somewhere else? Try writing somewhere else for a while, or even in a different position. If you are used to writing in a rigid, uncomfortable chair, try writing from the couch, or even from bed! Normally writing in a quiet room in your house? Try writing in a coffee shop, a park, or even your own front yard!
2. Writing method.
Do you typically write on a computer? Try writing from your phone, a tablet, or even in a notebook with a pen... Heck, try using a typewriter if you have one!
3. Writing atmosphere.
Do you write with quiet classical music playing in the background? Try listening to an ambiance video instead, if you are really committed, try burning some candles and pulling the curtains shut for a broody atmosphere!
There you have it, three basic ways to change up your writing. I don't know the psychology behind it, but writer's block, at least in me, seems to get worse when I'm in a rut, so even changing one little detail about how I write can help a lot.
That's it for this week! What tricks do you use to fight off writer's block? Share them in the comments below!
Have a great day, and keep writing!
