Hello again! Nice to "see" you!
This week's post is closely connected to last week's post, so don't think it's déjà vu if this feels a little familiar! That said, this week I thought I'd share one small lesson I've learned from writing: one that's been reinforced lately.
My WIP... it's over halfway written, but only by a little. Yet, this has already been a wild ride.
Here are some notes for those of you who may not have been keeping score, my WIP:
* Started life as a story I imagined when I was 11.
* Was meant to be a new reader's book.
* Changed to middle grade when I realized my voice was wrong.
* Changed to lit-fic when I learned my premise didn't fit children's books after all.
* Changed again to become contemporary lit when I decided to really knuckle under and figure out what I was writing.
* Is my first attempt in drafting (albeit very oddly)
* Has had a full chapter appear out of nowhere after I used all the material I had planned for it.
*Is still just over halfway written, so who knows what will happen next!
"Alright, that is interesting, but where is the lesson you promised me?"
Simply this; planning out your story is wonderful, and it's easy to get attached to an idea, but at the end of the day, you've got to let your story go where it wants, even if it's dragging you along behind it, kicking and screaming.
Have a great day, and keep writing!
