Hello again!
This week I thought I'd talk about something that's been stuck in the forefront of my mind recently; how to tell if your beta readers are actually good.
First off, I'd like to note that I have worked with beta readers five times now. Some were amazing, and I can truly tell you that there is nothing in the world like a good beta reader... but unfortunately, not all beta readers are created equal.
Now, some betas are great for one project, but not for another. That's normal! Just because a beta is great for a romance novella, does not necessarily mean they would be great at beta reading a horror epic. There are some truly extraordinary betas out there who can read almost anything, but of course, you can't assume that. But with that in mind, here are a few simple metrics to help you out.
1. A good beta reader will use constructive criticism, a bad one will tear down your book.
2. Similarly, a good beta will offer both positive and corrective comments, a bad beta will either only compliment or never admit they liked anything.
3. A good beta reader will help you get to the core of your book, a bad beta will tell you to change it to suit their personal taste. (Such as asking you to make a bittersweet ending more positive because they prefer happy endings.)
With all that in mind, I have to note that a lot of the responsibility for how well your Beta interactions go, is yours. Clear communication about what feedback you're looking for, setting a positive tone for the continuing interactions, and sharing when you need them to get back to you, lie in your hands. But if you have been kind, and upfront from the beginning, and they proceeded to ignore you, that's a pretty big sign that your beta isn't a good fit for you.
Have a great day, and keep writing!
