I don't know what your writing personality is, whether you are a structured plotter, a scattered pantser, (like me!), or somewhere in between. But I have certainly gone through my fair share of writing moods, and phases.
These days, I am proud to say that I spend much less time chasing "the muse" (unfortunately, it turns out there is more hard work to writing, than just waiting for the book to write itself.) But even now, I still err on the dramatic, and temperamental side when writing. And there is nothing I like better than to set the scene for writing: so here are some of my favorite ways to add a little flair to my writing experience!
1. Seating
Whether it's the couch, a recliner, the dining room table, an office, your bed, or even a blanket fort, choosing where you write is going to help you set the scene.
(Personally, I often write on the couch, surrounded by blankets and pillows, while I typically edit in my closet-office.)
2. Ambient music.
Nothing sets the scene like quiet music, and honestly, there are so many incredibly creative, talented people out there, that all you need to do is type in the type of ambiance, or mood you are trying to cultivate, and I promise you will find something!
4. Candles.
This is a weird one because if I am being entirely honest, I am a little pyrophobic, but pulling out a nice, scented candle can really help transport you, or just help you settle in for the process.
4. Snacks/drinks
Whether it's chai and cookies, lemon water and trail mix, or something dramatically different, grabbing some snacks before you start writing can both help you set the scene, and help prevent you from leaving your book mid-sentence when your stomach starts rumbling!
Well, those are some of my favorite ways to set the scene when writing, but what about you? Do you do anything special before settling in to write? Feel free to share your tricks in the comments!
Have a great day, and keep writing!
