Welcome!

When characters interfere

Hi there!

Part of being a pantser seems to be listening to my characters, even when they don't follow my plans. It's an odd part of writing that I thought I'd like to spend a little while considering today, feel free to read along if this sounds interesting!

I've been micro-drafting my books lately, as I'm sure you know... but that doesn't mean my books end up the way I imagine! For an example of what I mean, why not look to my current WIP?

As of writing this post, I've just finished writing chapter 11, the second to last chapter... the original draft, however, was for a 13-chapter book! Actually, chapter 6, was the first major change, with the entire timeline being shifted one day further forward, while chapters 8 and 9 were also largely changed from the original timeline.

Even beyond this, major points in my draft, have either been ignored, or condensed to small scenes, while minor points have very nearly become full chapters. And new characters have now become old friends.

Don't get me wrong, I love my micro-draft, and it's helped me more than you can imagine, but if I held onto it too firmly, I would have a very different story in my hands right now. So, all things considered, I'll stick to following my characters... even when they lead me in directions I didn't imagine.

Have a great day, and keep writing!
