Hello again, and welcome to a special Behind-the-Scenes post!
What do you do while your book is off with Beta Readers? While I can't answer this question for everyone, I thought I'd share some of what I do during the often impatient weeks spent waiting for my amazing Beta Readers to finish all their hard work.
1. Keep in contact with those who like to chat.
I've found that some Beta Readers like to keep up an active conversation while they are reading. Sometimes they have questions and comments they would talk through. So I keep my eyes and ears open and respond to them as promptly as reasonably possible.
2. Beta Read!
That might sound odd, but as a lot of my Beta Readers are authors themselves, I only think it's fair if I offer to read for them while they are doing the same for me. Believe it or not, between the last two books I've run through Beta Readers, I've actively Beta Read two amazing books in return.
3. Working on all the non-manuscript elements of Indie author life.
The back cover blurb, cover art, acknowledgments, dedication, blurbs for promos, and so much more... all these things need to be done sometime, so why not while I'm waiting anyways? When I'm really on top of my game, I'll also prep release posts and general promo posts, because I know I'm going to be very busy when all my feedback comes in!
4. Go over the feedback as it comes in.
Generally, I have at least one Beta who finishes the book in record time (sometimes as quick as one day!) So, I start compiling feedback as soon as it's in my hands. Getting a head start saves a lot of time when I'm ready to start the post-beta edits.
5. Take some time to rest.
Writing and editing a book takes a LOT of work! When I reach such a natural rest point in my writing process, I always try to take at least a little time off, to rest and let my brain reset before I have to start editing all over again.
So there you have it, a quick overview of how I tend to spend my time, while waiting on Beta Readers. But what about you? Do you have anything in particular you like to do while waiting for feedback? Feel free to share your answer below!
Have a great day, and keep writing!
